The Point Spread Function (PSF) is a fundamental description of an imaging system's resolution. From the PSF, other resolution measurements can be derived, including low-contrast resolution with a simple scalar characterization being the Full Width at Half Maximum Value (FWHM).

Signal Uniformity is an important measure of image quality, as changes in the uniformity can reflect a problem with a phased array coil.

Magphan RT Uniformity Analysis (Copy)

The analysis performs uniformity measurements over three dimensions by using the background regions that consist only of background fluid, and no features. The user can select two diameters over which to measure the uniformity.

The phantom contains markers for alignment with positioning lasers. The analysis provides data on phantom translation and rotation in all three cardinal axes.

Catphan: Sensitometry (Copy)

The sensitometry plot calculates the effective energy (keV) of the scan by plotting the measured CT number and the table values at each keV for the materials. The minimum residual from the linear fit of measured CT values vs. attenuation coefficient determines the estimated effective energy.

Catphan: Uniformity (Copy)

The plot is a profile from a vertical line through the uniformity module. The profile is an average of five rows of pixels smoothed to reduce noise.

Catphan: Wave Module (Copy)

This graph plots the pixel intensities through the wave insert. This profile gives rise to the harmonics through the Fourier transform.

The CT number measurements for the individual materials are from the representative slice closest to the median of the estimated effective energy..

Tomophan Regional Uniformity (Copy)

The regional uniformity displays lateral and AP direction profiles in an anterior and lateral uniformity region.

Tomophan Slice Sensitivity Profile (Copy)

The slice sensitivity profiles are used to accurately calculate the slice increments and remaining signal using the upper and lower bead ramps.

Tomophan Z axis geometry (Copy)

The signal intensity for each bead is calculated for each slice in the image set. These signal intensity profiles are plotted along with a sinc interpolation of the intensity.

Smári’s History

Phantom Laboratory’s automated image analysis service is named after Smári Kristinsson. Smári is a founder of Raförninn, an Icelandic company which began by servicing medical imaging equipment.

Through Smári’s leadership, Raförninn evolved to offer comprehensive support for medical imaging customers, including cloud-based communications and service tracking, department planning, scientific study support, specialized equipment design, and QA services. In the late 1990’s Smári saw the possibilities of web based computing as a way to advance medical imaging quality assurance. In 2006, Raförninn and Phantom Laboratory founded Image Owl Inc. to develop automated image analysis tools. Phantom Laboratory’s Smári analysis platform is a result of this development and collaboration.

While technically retired, Smári is still active in the medical imaging field, advising clinics on expansion design and new equipment purchasing along with teaching QA testing methodologies. Through the Smári analysis service we hope to carry on Smári Kristinsson’s life’s work and goal of improving the quality of medical imaging and the resulting impact on patient care.
