Phantom Patient

A full-body phantom with the dimensions of an average-size male patient

Indispensable for training students in the use of radiography equipment: radiographic images of the Phantom Patient™ will reveal phantom organs in the torso.

Unlimited Simulation

Training programs for radiographers rely on the Phantom Patient™ to provide unlimited service as a substitute for a real human patient.

Like the Sectional and RANDO® Phantoms, the Phantom Patient™ is constructed with a proprietary urethane formulation with an effective atomic number and mass density that closely simulates muscle tissue with randomly distributed fat. The material is capable of withstanding substantial impact and continuous handling without damage. The Phantom Patient™ has movable joints at the shoulders, elbows, hips, and knees that are ideal for training students in patient handling and positioning.

The lungs of the Phantom Patient™ are made of a low density material that is molded to fit the contours of the natural human rib cage. A hollow network within the torso represents a simplified arterial tree, which begins with the aortal arch and then bifurcates into the carotid arteries at the base of the neck and into the femoral arteries in the groin. Other hollow cavities within the Phantom Patient™ represent the interiors of the stomach, gall bladder, bladder, sigmoid flexure, and rectum. Filling ports and ducts that extend from the phantom's external surface to these internal cavities allow users to add or remove liquid contrast media or water.

Material Details

The Joints - The articulation at the shoulders, elbows, hips and knees allows students to be trained in patient handling and positioning in a manner not possible with Sectional Phantoms. Aluminum pins at these joints allow for 90° rotation, while the hands and feet are set in fixed positions (so images will not reveal any joint hardware). The right hand and left foot are set in a relaxed position. The left hand is pronated and the right foot is set in plantar flexion. Sectional Phantoms - without hardware - may be purchased for study of the shoulders, elbows, hips and knees.

The Organs - Radiographic images taken of the Phantom Patient™ will reveal organs in the torso. We duplicate the lungs' lower density with the special atomically correct material used in our RANDO® Phantom lungs. Hollow cavities reproduce the interiors of the stomach, gall bladder, bladder, sigmoid flexure with a small diverticulum, and rectum. Each cavity connects to the exterior surface of the torso by a duct which is sealed with an o-ring and plastic screw cap. The cavities can be filled with contrast media.

The Aorta Arterial Tree - A hollow network within the torso represents a simplified aorta arterial tree that begins with the aortal arch and bifurcates into the carotid arteries at the base of the neck and femoral arteries at the groin. Like the organs, the cavities can be filled with contrast media or water.

Skeletons - All of our anthropomorphic phantoms use natural human skeletons, skillfully reconstructed and adjusted to overcome any natural lack of symmetry, distorted joints, etc. and fit within the mold.
